4 hair trends to try in 2018

2017 was full of viral beauty trends. From the infamous (and hilarious) black peel-off mask to foiled hair and glossy lids - beauty fanatics were busy both creating and keeping up with the next big thing. To keep you on-trend and on-point this year we did research on some products and trends we’ve been keeping our  👀  on.

Wet + Wild

Ever have those moments when you hop out of the shower, pieces of wet hair stuck to your face, and pretend you’re Britney Spears circa “I’m a Slave 4 U” for a quick sec? Oh, yeah… us either. Anyway, there’s no doubt that there has been a resurgence of the sultry wet hair look popularized by Queen Brit in 2001. While Britney opted for a more messy style then, today we’re seeing sleek and super glossy renditions of the look as donned by Queen Bella.

While wet hair has been a go-to look for many fashion week models over the past year, we think this look is too cute and too wearable to not be all over the streets. Here's our tips and tricks to make this look your very own. For a subtle, piecey look - start with 70% dry hair and apply an ample amount of Verb Styling Cream throughout the naturally separated pieces of hair. Twist hair sections as you apply the Styling Cream so that once your hair dries, you’re left with defined shower-like separation. Feel free to apply Verb Strong Hairspray for an all day hold.

If you’re more into the shiny, drenched look, you’ll want to reach for Verb Ghost Oil. Apply to damp hair, twist to define and separate, and finish with Strong Hairspray.

Now, go out and make a splash with this look!

Fountain Ponies

Whether for the gym, a night out, or just to get your hair away from your face, ponytails are pretty much appropriate for any occasion. It doesn’t take much to make them look good and feel comfortable, which is why they’ll never go out of style. A rendition of the traditional ponytail that we’ve been digging recently is called the fountain pony. Think Topanga from Boy Meets World.

This isn’t your typical quick and casual pony. The fountain pony involves gathering hair into a tight pony at the crown of the head and securing with a thick elastic band. With your hair secured, take a toothbrush (not one you use to brush your pearly whites obvi), apply some Verb Sculpting Clay to the bristles, and smooth out the bumps, always brushing away from the face. This next step is why we call this style the fountain ponytail. Take a brush or small-toothed comb and, holding your ponytail in one hand, place the comb about 2 inches above where the elastic lies on your head and TEASE. Tease like you’ve never teased before. Once you’ve gotten your fountain pony to the preferred height, take the comb and gently brush your ponytail, smoothing the frizzies made by teasing. Grab your Verb Ghost Dry Oil and spray generously throughout the ponytail for added shine and hydration.

It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time

Looking for a more dramatic change to your locks in 2018? It’s called peanut butter and jelly hair and it is delish AF.

Created by stylist Megan Schipani, PB & J hair involves lightening the entire head of hair then applying a ton of berry/maroon lowlights. Some lightened pieces of hair are set aside to add in some gorgeous caramel/peanut buttery highlights. The style creates a TON of depth while remaining manageable.

To prevent your PB & J from going stale, make sure you use a lightweight, color protecting wash and style routine, which means the Verb Ghost line will be your BFF. We recommend using Ghost Shampoo and Conditioner in the shower to weightlessly condition your color treated hair while leaving hair totally tangle and snag free. If you use heat to style, protect your strands from further damage by applying Verb Ghost Prep (protects up to 425 degrees).

Breathtaking Baby Hairs

Styling baby hairs has been a fully mastered art within the Natural Hair community for decades now. For individuals sporting coarse, coiled, or protective hairdos, using a gel to tame baby hairs is a long standing stylistic approach that was born out of necessity. Only now is the mainstream realizing that these unruly, feathery hairs are actually a chic styling opportunity in disguise.

Sculpting baby hairs is actually quite easy, granted you have the right tools at your disposal. First, you’ll want to purchase a product with some super strong holding power. For an all day hold that provides a beautiful matte finish use Verb Forming Fiber. Start with a generous amount of the Forming Fiber, heat it up with your fingertips and apply to baby hairs in a downward motion. Then you’ll need to grab a toothbrush or a fine-toothed rattail comb to manipulate the hairs. Starting at your natural part, brush the baby hairs in a swooping downward motion.

Styled baby hairs is a fun and versatile way to elevate any hairstyle. You can style baby hairs in intricate swirls, retro zig-zags, or just casually swoop them to the side. Whatever you do, we sure hope to see you embracing these difficult little hairs in 2018.
