5 things to keep your tresses in tip-top shape all winter long

Posted by Kayce Sebree on

Winter temps are here. While we’re all about this #sweaterweather, cute outerwear means cold temps and with cold temps comes thirsty hair. Keep your hair looking right, tight, and hydrated all season long with these tips and tricks...

Protect those ends

Split ends are the bane of every hair-enthusiasts existence. Just as you’re starting to see some results on your hair growth journey - BAM there they are. Winter weather wreaks havoc on split ends, making them look and feel worse than you ever thought they could. While those split ends will eventually need a trim for a permanent remedy, applying product along your ends is *essential* to preventing any further damage. For a weightless yet nourishing protectant, try working Verb Ghost Oil into damp hair. This oil contains moringa oil, which encourages touchable hydration without weighing your hair down or making it look/feel like an oil slick.

Get a trim

Adding product to your ends not cutting it anymore? Welp, then it’s time to cut ties with those crispy ends. Trimming ends every 6 - 8 weeks is recommended as a best practice to encourage hair growth and overall health all year round. While we don’t expect you to get a cut 8x a year, frigid winter temperatures and blustering winds push your tresses to the limits, drying out the shaft and exacerbating your existing splits. Getting rid of those irreparable dead ends in the wintertime is an essential step in setting your hair up for a healthy year to come. Your hair will thank you!

Extend time between do’s - limit shampoos

The less you ‘poo during the winter months, the better. Shampooing tends to strip hair of naturally produced oils that are essential for a healthy scalp. On top of that, the more you shampoo, the more oil your scalp will produce to replace the oil you're shampooing out. This means you’re left with an endless cycle of oily scalp with dry middle/ends - yuck! Until springtime, try (it’s hard!) limiting your shampoos to 2-3 times per week maximum, and extending your hairdos longer than you normally would. This allows your hair to recuperate from any heat you may have applied while limiting the amount of oil stripped by constant shampooing. For a volumized and fresh second (or fourth!)-day hairstyle, reach for dry shampoo to help you out between washes.

Mask on!

One way to pump moisture into winter-damaged hair is by doing hair masks consistently throughout the winter months. You can do this with an at-home DIY mask or a store bought product. If you want to go the DIY route, avocado, honey, egg whites, and olive oil are just a few common household ingredients you can use to whip up some great hair masks in the comfort of your own home. If you’re looking for some moisturizing mask recipes, check out this StyleCaster article. If you prefer to leave the mask-making to the professionals, Verb Hydrating Mask is a weightless conditioning treatment designed to gently nourish all hair types. Use weekly to restore color-treated, over-styled hair or to add shine and softness. Whichever you choose, make sure to mask at least once every week or so during this winter season. Don’t listen to Future - Mask ON!

Exfoliate your scalp

Yup! You read that correctly - exfoliate your scalp. The skin on top of our head deserves just as much TLC as the skin on our face and neck. Applying an exfoliant increases blood circulation on your scalp (encouraging hair follicle stimulation and growth) and breaks up residual hair product and dead skin cells, leaving you with a squeaky clean scalp. DIY pro tip: add a quarter-sized amount of sugar to your Verb Volume Shampoo once every 2-3 weeks to buff away residue while energizing hair from root to tip. Follow with Verb Volume Conditioner and style away!
