Salons we love: Scout's Barbershop

Posted by Kayce Sebree on

Verb started out of a salon and we know that if it wasn't for our biggest and hardest working fans, stylists, that Verb wouldn't be where we are today. This is the first post in our "Salons We Love" series where we'll be interviewing and highlighting some of the amazing salons that carry Verb and the hardworking people behind them.

Interview with Scout's Barbershop (Nashville, TN) Co-owner and longtime Verb user, Keila Trevino

How long have you been a stylist?

13 years!..When I was in college I started cutting my friends hair in the bathroom and realized that was something I liked doing. I had started working some terrible job and my mom suggested beauty school. At first I thought "no way beauty school is so vain and all about looks" but moms are so wise and she said "no it's about making people look and feel better about themselves". So I decided to move and went to a really great school. I was one of the lucky ones and got a job out of school right away working at a barbershop. During school I hadn't focused that much on men's hair so I definitely learned the hard way by watching people and being open to criticism. That job taught me so much but it was great and I've been in the barbershop world ever since then..

What’s your personal philosophy as a stylist?

For me, I want my clients to feel heard and listened to and leave feeling better about who they are and about how they look. It's important that they are leaving with confidence and that's pretty much all I care about..

When did you know you wanted to start your own salon?

I really had no desire to start own salon, I saw how much work it took and thought there was no way I could do it myself. Then, I was living in Austin when an old friend moved to Nashville and kept telling me how there were no barbershops there and that we should open one together. We decided in March of 2014 to start actually talking about it and I flew to Nashville to look at things. At first I thought I was going to consult from afar but realized quickly that I needed to be there fulltime and moved that fall and ... it's been a trip! But I can't imagine what else I'd be doing with my life, this is the right place for me now. I'm so glad I have my co-owner, Brooke Asbury Allison, because I can’t imagine doing it by myself, I think the most successful salons are when you have a right brain and left brain person to run things just like Michael and Jayson (Verb co-founders)..They were really such great mentors through it all too, so I'm very thankful for that.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your salon?

Our first location in Nashville is very northwest cabin feel. Also inspired by East Nashville, which is all about white walls, live wood, exposed brick, and the simplistic design look. Our newest location on the west side has more of a classic barbershop feel with a library feel/apothecary twist to it. (Check out the photos above)

Best moment this far as a salon owner?

There's two things that always make me feel great is when clients come in and say "this salon is always what I’ve been looking for and I'm so happy a place like this exists". It feels really great to have clients appreciate your business model, aesthetic and design. Also as a stylist and salon owner seeing my new hires do something they’re proud of it makes me really proud too... I love getting to mentor people in that aspect!

Why is Verb a good fit for Scout's?

There's a lot of reasons. One is that I can feel comfortable suggesting it to my clients because everyone loves the price. I also really like the grapefruit/oatmeal scent and really just the fact that it works. It's that simple. My clients once they use it really love it...I love it too.  I keep trying new products and going back to Verb.
